In general, ALL SKI SLOPES in the Sölden Ski Area are GROOMED DAILY by using 23 state-of-the-art snow-grooming machines. In good weather (no precipitation) grooming works start every day at 4.30 pm and end approximately at 11.00 pm – if needed also much later. Perfectly prepared ski runs require enough freezing time during the night. In case of night-time snowfalls the snow-grooming machines are also in operation from 6.00 am in the morning in order to flatten the freshly fallen snow. But in this case the problem is that the freshly fallen snow doesn't combine well with the old layer of snow. Therefore the ski runs tend to become mogul pistes very quickly. Sometimes our guests think that there was no snow-grooming at all. But in some cases with very little fresh snow it's better not to prepare the slopes again in the morning to avoid more harm. This decision is made daily by the responsible ski slope manager, based upon consultation with the snow grooming operators. The preparation of a ski slope during operating hours of the ski area is far too dangerous and will therefore be avoided.

The avalanche danger level on the ski slopes within the Sölden Ski Area is evaluated daily by an independent commission of experts. Right in time before the mountain lifts are going in operation, the ski slopes in the entire ski area are controlled on-site. Then the commission decides about all the necessary safety measures (avalanche blasting, etc.). Evaluating the level of avalanche hazard is necessary not only with freshly fallen snow but also on windy days as the wind factor ranks among the most dangerous avalanche triggersat. The snow-grooming activities can start only after appropriate maintenance and safety works on the ski slopes, followed by a positive report of the local avalanche safety committee. Also during the day precipitations, strong winds or warming up periods can cause the closing of certain ski slopes or sections if the responsible avalanche safety committee confirms the high level of danger..

Strong winds can influence considerably the safety of mountain lift operation, depending on the type of mountain lift (gondola, cable car, chair lift, T-bar lift, ...), the geographic location (high altitude), the wind force and the wind direction. For measuring the different wind force levels and directions a number of technical devices are available. In combination with longstanding personal experience, up-to-date weather reports and accurate observation of the mountain lifts (swinging) by the service staff on-site, these technical facilities help to make important decisions. Together with the operating manager the entire team decides about the safety of every single ski lift. Special wind conditions affecting only small areas (e.g. mountain lift top stations) can also result in the interruption of the mountain lift operation. Sometimes these very specific and local disturbances only affect the high Alpine regions and are hardly understandable if your are down in the valley.
